Consumer Storage and the Home Area Network: A Tidal Wave of Opportunity
Rick Bauer
Download

The trends for networked storage in consumer environments continue to indicate that more and more data is finding its way into the home. While most home/consumer storage implementations were stand-alone/direct-attached, 2008 is seeing more and more networked storage begin appeared in residential environments. What are the implications as consumers want more "networking" in their home storage?

Learning Objectives

  • To survey the growing market for home/consumer storage, and understand the drivers for continue growth in this market
  • To understand what technologies are being implemented in this area, and look at future developments and technologies will exist in the "HAN" (Home Area Network), including commerce, e-government, entertainment, security, and energy management
  • To expand the perception that SNIA is only a "big iron" trade association, and to stimulate the entrance of consumer storage companies into the SNIA and SNW.

How to Choose and Evaluate Storage for your Environment:  From the Consumer Point of View
Chris Lionetti
Download

This presentation will describe a repeatable process for evaluating storage product to ensure that your business needs are met, and your operational risks are minimized. This selection and evaluation process will allow you to select best of breed and go from a poorly defined request for storage to a vetted/tested/defined/deterministic successful deployment. At the end of this presentation you should have a well defined process to follow with clear milestones, a clear list of defined interactions with vendors, and way to change your vendor relationship from a buyer/seller to a vendor/partner.

Learning Objectives

  • well defined process to follow with clear milestones
  • clear list of defined interactions with vendors
  • way to change your vendor relationship from a buyer/seller to a vendor/partner

Solid State Storage for the Enterprise
Brian McKean and Woody Hutsell
Download

This presentation will discuss the types of solid state storage systems directed at enterprise. The presentation will look at DDR-RAM and Flash based storage devices and their technical differences. The presentation will provide some examples of the variance in the operational characteristics among different flash based SSD. The presentation will discuss the fit of various memory based storage devices with enterprise applications.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand types of solid state storage available for enterprise applications.
  • Understand that not all Flash SSDs are the same.
  • Discuss applications for solid state storage in the enterprise.

Storage Consolidation with IP Storage
David Dale
Download

This session will appeal to IT managers, administrators and architects interested in best practices and deployment considerations of storage consolidation solutions available with IP Storage technologies today. This presentation, an update to a very popular SNIA Tutorial, outlines the benefits of networked storage, contrasting the different options. It then goes into detail on iSCSI-based SAN configurations, capabilities, options and best practices, including contemporary iSCSI storage features. It then explains via customer case studies how these capabilities deliver benefits to IT organizations. Finally, emerging and future technologies and capabilities are considered, including 10GbE and FCoE.

MAID Technology Adoption Into Data Centers
Chris Santilli

Today the demand for more and more capacity is out-growing the ability to access the content. Or is it?  The demand for disk storage is demonstrated by the 130+ million of disk drives shipped quarterly. The usage of the disk storage ranges from “transactional” to “archive/persistent” data. A new technology MAID (Massive Array of Idle Disks) provides for the power management of disks drives, thus creating a new service level for retaining and accessing “archive/persistent” data.  For instance, the SATA disk drive performance utilizing the SATA-2 interface at 3.0Ghz with effective streaming performance of 60MBps (216GBph) and capacities of 120GB, yields the ability to read and/or write a complete disk drives in approximately (120GB/60MBps= 33.3minutes). Today a 1TB SAS or FC drives has the streaming capabilities of 90MBps will take approximately (1TB/90MBps = 185.18minutes). The gap to access the content on a disk drive has widened by a factor of ~5.5x. How does this gap attribute to the ability of a Transactional Storage Tier “all powered disk drives” and Persistent Data Storage Tier  “power managed disk drives”?

Learning Objectives

  • What are the attributes associated with ‘absolute’ addressing and ‘relative’ addressing of content on disk array using JBOD or RAID algorithms?
  • What are the advantages to more cache and/or the use of flash memory in a power managed storage array?
  • What does a storage administrator need to know with growing information content as it relates to I/O performance relative the increased number of disk drives available for Read or Write?
  • What is the minimum and maximum “Mean Time to First Byte” (MTTFB) as it relates to information access of power managed disk arrays?
  • What is the frequency of access of information….0-90 days, 90-180 days and 180+ days?
  • What is the impact to “Mean Time to Last Byte (MTTLB) as it relates to the retrieval of long term data retention utilizing power managed disk arrays?

Why Data Integrity is Important to You
Richard Vanderbilt
Download

As processors become faster, greater core counts, greater cache, and faster devices, are you any more protected from silent data corruptions?  The reality is, you are more at risk than ever before.  Find out how the industry is pulling together to enhance Data integrity through a standards-based approach.

Learning Objectives

  • Present the growing concern of data integrity as industry advancements may present new challenges
  • Present how the industry is collaborating to address these concerns by supporting Standards
  • Present how SNIA.org DITWG is working to move these standards upstream to protect user data from application to spindle, inflight and at rest.
