Abstract |
| Classification: The Cornerstone for Compliance and Cost-driven Information Management |
Without a clear understanding of all the information under management in your environment, it is impossible to get a handle on information growth, compliance-related risk mitigation and information management costs. The practice of information classification is fundamental to an effective information-centric ILM strategy. Information classification requires that I.T. administrators work with Line-of-Business and knowledge workers to gain an understanding of the data to be managed. Once a clear set of goals and policies are established you can efficiently organize your information into tiers of service that will meet the performance, protection, and compliance requirements of your business. |
| The Secret Sauce of ILM |
Does Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) seem large and fuzzy with the promise of lots of work for little return? It may be a bunch of work, but the little return part is a fallacy that has been disproven in many large data centers. This session will focus on how you can "kick butt" with ILM, achieve expectations from your project, set reasonable objectives, and get cooperation and assistance along the way. Sound too good to be true? This session was developed by SNIA's Professional Services ILM Task Group. There are plenty of "real-life" examples that have been gathered from among your peers. |

Three hour workshop:
ITSM, ILM and Data Classification -- A Deep Dive from Process to Policy to Procedure |
Data centers and IT organizations are evolving to cope with the rapid pace of change demanded by the business, the rapid growth of information and its elevated risk, and the increased requirements demanded by regulatory governance. There are three key process and technology-oriented areas that can improve information governance: IT Service Management, ILM and automated Data Classification. Come learn how information-centric management practices in the data center can help you effectively address these issues through well-defined processes and automated policies and procedures.
ITSM (IT Service Mgmt) is an integrated set of best-practices with common definitions and terminology for IT processes such as Problem Management, Change Management and Infrastructure Management. ILM (Information Lifecycle Management) provides the policies that align information with the most appropriate resources in the data center over its entire lifecycle, from creation to final disposition. Classification is the procedure by which we organize information and resources. In this context, it is a cornerstone to the delivery of IT Service Management and Information Lifecycle Management. When combined, these three practices are the foundation of the "information-centric enterprise.”
Participants will be provided with reference materials and worksheets.
Learning Objectives
- Provide a broad coverage of ITIL with a 'deep dive' focus on all aspects of IT Service Management processes
- Learn what policy-driven ILM means today and in the future
- Discover the capabilities available in the current data classification products that can enable you to automate this critical procedure

| Tiered Services & the Need for Classification |
Establishing an ILM strategy is a high priority for many organizations as they struggle to deal with data growth and regulatory compliance. The definition of tiered services is an important part of that ILM strategy. Two keys to a successful tiered service implementation are:
Resource classification - organizing your storage-related services into tiers that will meet the requirements of your business.
Data Classification - if you don't know what you have or how valuable it is, it’s very hard to decide what data should be placed on a particular service tier.
In this tutorial we will look at how to think about organizing your storage-related service tiers based on your needs, and at data classification techniques and emerging technologies that can help you manage the placement of data across different tiers of service, or the movement of data across storage within the same service tier. |
