WHITEPAPER OFFERED BY THE INFORMATION LIFECYCLE MANAGEMENT INITIATIVE

The second in a series of eBulletin updates from the ILMI Professional
Services Task force is a whitepaper authored by Bob "Mister" Rogers =
titled
"Storage Service Management, The Foundation of ILM". This paper outlines
some of the initial discussions and findings of the ILMI Professional
Services Task Force. Here is a short abstract of the paper:

The cost of retaining and managing information can easily become
overwhelming; and yet, few enterprises today offer differentiated =
storage
services to their business processes. Understanding the business process
lifecycle can redirect resources that are being used by less deserving
applications to the "bread-winner" business processes. The repertoire of
Storage Administrators and Enterprise Architects has generally not =
included
the storage and information aspects of business processes; however, =
taking
the time to learn them can yield significant results.

ILM is a dramatic change in information management, focusing on the =
value of
information and delivering storage services based on management
requirements. If this sounds reminiscent of the IT Infrastructure =
Library
(ITIL) approach to systems management, or the IT Governance Institute's
Control Objectives for Information and Related Technology (CobiT), they =
are
inextricably linked to one another.

This White Paper is intended to discuss the issues and benefits arising =
from
an information lifecycle management (ILM) effort and can be found in the
resource library of the DMF website at
http://www.snia-dmf.org/library/index.shtml.

DE-DUPLICATION: WHO IS INTERESTED?

The DMF Data Protection Initiative is assessing the interest level of =
its
membership in promoting and providing education about de-duplication.
Depending on interest levels, a SIG or some specific project initiatives =
may
be initiated. An exploratory meeting is scheduled as part of the DPI =
agenda
at the SNIA Winter Symposium in San Jose on January 31. All interested
parties are encouraged to attend. If your company is interested in =
exploring
de-duplication initiatives within DPI, please contact DPI co-chairs =
Jason
Iehl and Agnes Lamont at Jason.Iehl@quantum.com and
agnes.lamont@timespring.com.
