OPPORTUNITY OF A LIFETIME:

It isn't often that you are given the opportunity to contribute to establishing industry directions by defining the user and market requirements and then setting about implementing a "Self-describing Self-contained Data Format" (SD-SCDF) that will impact the storage industry for decades to come.

SD-SCDF is a proposal for an open logical format standard based on marrying the OAIS-'Archival Information Package' with XAM. The intent is that through a XAM-based approach, applications can write an information object which solves the problems associated with maintaining the logical readability of information over very long periods of time. The two biggest obstacles in long-term preservation of information are physical and logical migration. SD-SCDF is SNIA's new program to define standards to solve the logical migration problem.

Does this sound interesting? Well it should, the current members of the 100 Year Archive Task Force are very excited and believe that SD-SCDF will address a number of challenges associated with preserving information over time. It is intended as a platform-agnostic standard for future archive content. The 100 Year Archive Task Force has accepted the challenge and is assembling a team of specialists now. The Task Force meets every other Thursday at 3pm ET. The next call is April 12th. For more information, email gary.zasman@netapp.com.

DPI announces: Just published Mesabi Group report - available to SNIA Members:

This comprehensive report titled "Data Protection: Adapting to the Sea of Change" re-examines the basic principles of data protection in light of all the new demands that are being placed upon the IT infrastructure, and it also looks at how both maturing and emerging data protection hardware and software technologies affect those changes. The report examines and identifies the key decisions that should be made and strategies that should be implemented before evaluation of products and services can begin, and the intent is to arm the reader with information that enable them to act more effectively to achieve data protection.

The Mesabi Group is managed by David Hill, a well known Author and recognized thought leader in the field of storage and storage management. David has authored this report and as an active member of the DMF's Data Protection Initiative, he has generously donated this report for research purposes to SNIA members. It can be accessed in the DPI document repository under "Donated Reference Material".
