Database Information Management Special Interest Group (DIM SIG)

The DMF LTACSI is pleased to form a new SNIA Special Interest Group to explore the emerging field of Database Information Management.

DIM SIG Authors NEW White paper

The database administration community has long focused on what they call the “data management” challenges associated with databases: data quality, cleansing, modeling, master data, mining, etc. Now is the time to address the “information management” challenges as well. Our new white paper explains how the application of a management framework such as Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) is a viable approach to help optimize the performance and reduce the operating costs of databases and the enterprise applications that rely upon them.

DIM SIG Projects Are Defined

The SNIA’s Long–Term Archive and Compliant Storage Initiative recently formed a Database Information Management Special Interest Group (DIM-SIG), to address the need for cooperative market education and best practices in this field delivered world–wide through SNIA’s broad resources. This group is made up of leading database and database information management vendors, and participation is open to SNIA members.

Recently the DIM SIG kicked off the following focused project areas:

  • Develop a taxonomy and glossary for DIM practices
  • Develop best practices papers covering a number of DIM practices such as:
  • Application Retirement and the challenges related database migration
  • Improving Test and development cloning practices
  • Capacity optimization: Containing data growth
  • Information governance, compliance, litigation, and risk mitigation
  • eDiscovery
  • Long–term retention and preservation in a database environment
  • Buyer’s Guide of Database Information management products
  • Produce webcasts, briefings, videos, and tutorials on DIM practices

We need YOUR valuable input too. If any of these projects interest you – please contact DIM SIG Chair Gary Zasman who can help you jump right in!

Founding members for the DIM SIG include NetApp and IBM. They have validated the need for this program but they need YOU!

By participating in this early stage you will help form the direction and ultimate success of the group.

Participation will provide many opportunities for you and your company:

  • Ground-floor leadership role in developing database information management best practices and standards
  • Collaboration on educational, marketing, and outreach activities
  • Learn from academic and industry research, and to keep up-to-date on this rapidly-evolving area of our industry
  • An opportunity to be informed, to help frame research and standards development, and to help influence projects that SNIA will undertake
