IP Storage Technical Activities

There continues to be a tremendous pace of innovation around IP Storage among storage vendors, data management software vendors, operating system vendors, and industry standards bodies.  Over the last few years iSCSI matured rapidly with growing acceptance among SMBs and Enterprise Customers. We've seen complete support for all of the major operating systems, a variety of iSCSI host bus adapter (HBA) offerings, multi-pathing solutions, cluster support, SAN boot, enterprise backup integration - such that in many cases, solutions are at par with fiber channel based storage solutions.

In the technical community, there is a continuous effort to innovate and improve the iSCSI eco system. 10Gb Ethernets deployments have emerged, and 100Gb Ethernet is on the drawing board: the Ethernet transport continues to innovate towards a unified scalable network infrastructure.

TCP offloading is opening the doors for high performance coupled with ease of use and various standards bodies are working on RDMA, Infiniband and iSCSI Management (Storage Management Initiative (SMI) and iSCSI Management API), which further broaden IP Storage usage scenarios.

IP Storage Forum Technical Committee & Technical Working Group (TWG)

The charter of this committee is to be the “technical interface” between the IPSF and the SNIA IP TWG.  the committee also tracks and provides information about advances made by other standard organizations working on IP Storage technology.

The IP Storage TWG is particularly focused on endpoint and data management standards - and provides IP Storage specific input into the SNIA's Storage Management Initiative-Specification (SMI-S) standards activity.  The IPSF Technical Committee collects any new requirements gathered as part of IPSF marketing activities and coordinates with IP Storage TWG on their technical merit and feasibility. It also actively engages with other SNIA technical working groups to promote IP Storage related content in their work.
