DPCO Alliance Activities

The SNIA Long Term Retention Technical Work Group now has a public Web site located at www.snia.org/ltr. The site has links to several helpful tutorials, documents and presentation on the concepts and issues related to long term preservation of digital information.

For information about other alliance activities related to Data Protection and Capacity Optimization please refer to DPCO News & Events.

Announcing the DPCO online Product Selection Guide (PSG)

The DPI Members Buyer’s Guide was a popular handout at the Fall 2009 Storage Networking World conference. It listed characteristics of products providing Continuous Data Protection (CDP), Virtual Tape Library (VTL), and Data Deduplication capabilities, using standardized terminology.

The rapidly evolving data protection market and the static nature of the Buyer’s Guide led the DPCO Committee to develop a more automated, easier to use, online guide. This new Product Selection Guide (PSG) will allow vendors to reach a broader set of potential customers with the most current information.

Broad participation and exposure

Any member of SNIA can provide information about their own backup/recovery products, capacity–optimized storage, and replication products. Participation in the DPCO committee is encourage but is not required.

The Product Selection Guide allows the public to find products from SNIA members that meet their selection criteria. Reports can be viewed online or downloaded as a spreadsheet or a pdf.

Up to date product information

SNIA members will be able to enter information about their products online, at any time, ensuring the most current product information available. These submissions will be published online in the PSG after a conformity review.

Watch for an availability announcement

We anticipate that SNIA members (vendors) will be able to enter their product information in the second quarter of 2011. PSG handouts will be made available at Fall 2011 SNW in Orlando, FL.

Capacity Optimization in SMI–S

Many of the capacity optimization technologies being evangelized by the DPCO Committee are supported by devices that can now be managed using the Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI–S).

The SNIA Storage Management Initiative has worked with the DPCO Committee to add support for more such features to the latest version of SMI–S.

DPCO at Spring 2011 SNW

Please join us at our next face to face meeting on Wednesday, April 6, from 8:00am–10:30am Pacific Time, in room 207 of the Santa Clara Convention Center. We will be planning our upcoming activities and your input is welcome. It is not necessary to be enrolled in SNW to participate.

If you are attending Storage Networking World in Santa Clara, CA from April 4th–7th, you can meet the experts during these presentations:

Advanced Deduplication Concepts presented by Larry Freeman, NetApp, and Tom Pearce, Four Colour IT Solutions, on Monday at 1pm.

Deduplication’s Role in Disaster Recovery presented by Thomas Rivera, SEPATON, and Gene Nagle, Exar, on Wednesday at 2:10pm

DPCO has also created a new tutorial discussing how data deduplication complements the cloud:

Capacity Optimization Technologies for the Cloud

This and all other SNIA tutorials may be downloaded here during SNW. Note that links in the left margin provide access to materials from previous SNW conferences.

We’ve also collected webcasts, white papers, and presentations related to data protection, capacity optimization, and data management in the DPCO Knowledge Center.

We encourage you to visit the SNIA website to gain access to this valuable material.
