Long Term Retention Technical Work Group Involved in New EU Project
The SNIA LTR TWG is currently participating in a team of experts working on a newly launched EU project called ForgetIT: Concise Preservation by combining Managed Forgetting and Contextualized Remembering.
This project addresses current challenges in the area of multimedia preservation, in the personal and organizational context, by introducing three new concepts: 1) Managed Forgetting, which is inspired by the important role of forgetting in human memory; 2) Synergetic Preservation, which crosses the chasm between active information use and preservation management; 3) Contextualized Remembering, which aims at keeping preserved content meaningful and useful along time.
SNIA Cloud Archive and Preservation SIG Presenting at SNW
The SNIA Cloud Archive and Preservation Special Interest Group (SIG) recently presented the Webcast “Big Data Meets Big Cloud Archives” and will be presenting a tutorial entitled “Digital Data Archive and Preservation in the Cloud — What To Do and What Not To Do” at SNW Spring in Orlando which will appeal to Storage Vendors, Datacenter Managers, Developers, and those seeking a basic understanding of how best to implement a Cloud Storage Digital Archive and Cloud Storage Digital Preservation service.
SNIA e–Learning App Now Available
SNIA has recently developed an app that will allow you to download SNIA Certification e–Courses to your iPad or iPhone. This will allow for even more flexibility when studying with SNIA e–Courses.
These courses contain the same material that is presented in our face–to–face training courses, but saves you the cost of travel and tuition, and also allows you to study at your own pace. Three e–Courses are available and include Storage Networking Foundations (CompTIA Storage+ Powered by SNIA), Storage Networking Standards — Management & Administration, and Storage Networking Sales Professional Training. View a free preview of these courses.
Ethernet Storage Forum Expands Its Charter
The Ethernet Storage Forum (ESF) has adjusted its charter to better address trends in the market place by redefining its Special Interest Groups to focus on the broader use of file protocols in datacenter applications, and the continued push toward datacenter consolidation with the use of Ethernet as a storage network.
The previously named NFS SIG was renamed the File Protocol SIG and will focus on promoting not only NFS, but also SMB / CIFS solutions and protocols. The iSCSI SIG was renamed to the Storage over Ethernet SIG and will focus on promoting data center convergence topics with Ethernet networks, including the use of block and file protocols, such as NFS, SMB, FCoE, and iSCSI, over the same wire.
Storage Management Initiative Plugfest Updates
SMI plugfests are held several times a year, usually at the SNIA US Technology Center in Colorado Springs, to test interoperability across SMI–S implementations, validate CTP test updates, and create proof–of–concept implementations of proposals for inclusion in the SMI–S standard. In addition, plugfests provide an opportunity to meet with peer developers and folks supporting commonly used CIMOMs.
SMI–Lab has already had two plugfest events so far this year. The January plugfest was held at the Tech Center in Colorado Springs CO, and the March plugfest was held at Microsoft in Redmond WA and was particularly well attended.
