Next Generation Data Center

Several years ago, the industry analyst group IDC produced a definition of the Next Generation Data Center – a new architecture designed for the digital transformation of IT, designed to meet the demands of mobile apps, social media and big data, built around new technologies – cloud, flash, virtualization and orchestration. Software Defined Storage (SDS) underpins the Software Defined Data Center and provides a foundation for the Next Generation Data Center.

SNIA defines SDS as virtualized storage with a service management interface, which includes pools of storage with data service characteristics that may be applied to meet the requirements specified through a service management interface. The benefits of SDS include automation, interface standardization, virtual data paths, improved scalability and transparency.

SNIA Swordfish™ provides an interface to automate the management of the storage resources and discovery of their capabilities. An extension to the DMTF Redfish® specification, Swordfish provides a unified approach for the management of storage and servers in hyperscale and cloud infrastructure environments.
