SNIA Linear Tape File System Format Specification Now an ISO/IEC Standard

The Linear Tape-Open (LTO) Consortium, and the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) announced on June 8, 2016 that the Linear Tape File System (LTFS) Format Specification is now an International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard (ISO/IEC 20919:2016).  LTFS v2.2 allows for file system implementations using tape. It is a standard for data interchange, which enables user-friendly access to tape data using familiar tools and interfaces. It provides cross-platform and cross-vendor interoperability for tape, and makes viewing and accessing tape files easier than ever. This announcement reinforces ISO/IEC confidence in file management system for Linear Tape-Open technology. Read the press release.

SSM Reels in Swordfish

The SNIA Scalable Storage Management (SSM) Technical Work Group released version 0.6 of the Storage Management Initiative’s Swordfish application programming interface for public review on May 25, 2016.  Swordfish is an easy-to-use standard for managing data storage and storage services that is being defined as an extension to the Distributed Management Task Force’s (DMTF) Redfish specification. Simpler to implement than existing legacy standards, the Swordfish interface is so easy to use that even a non-technical professional can manage storage and related data services. Swordfish can accomplish a range of storage management tasks ranging from typical to advanced, and is designed to integrate with next-generation technologies such as hyperconverged, hyperscale and cloud.

The updated version completes the block storage schema, adding full active management and provisioning, including remote replication functionality. It also includes a proposal for seamless extension of the Redfish Volume and Storage Services schemas. It is available for public review. SNIA SSM members can submit feedback directly; other SNIA members can submit feedback through the SNIA portal.  Note: Work-in-Progress DRAFTS are subject to change.

Learn more about Swordfish at the SNIA Data Storage Innovation Conference where  Richelle Ahlvers, Storage Management Software Architect, Broadcom Limited and SSM TWG Chair, will be presenting “Introduction to Swordfish: Scalable Storage Management,” on June 15th from 10:55 – 11:35 a.m.
