Jump Start Your SNIA Swordfish™ Implementation
|
|
If you’ve heard the buzz about SNIA’s Swordfish™ specification and want to learn more, there’s now a new interactive resource packed full of useful information available online here. As with other Swordfish information, you can also find a link to this new interactive resource on the SNIA Swordfish page.
The “SNIA Swordfish Practical Guide” provides a quick-start reference for implementers who are developing clients and providers for SNIA Swordfish, which is an extension of the DMTF’s Redfish® specification. Using the same easy-to-use RESTful interface, along with JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) and Open Data Protocol (OData) as Redfish, Swordfish seamlessly manages storage equipment and services.
The Practical Guide brings together best practices, frequently asked questions, real world experience and detailed specification content. The interactive screens lead you to the appropriate content, whether you are looking for a general understanding of the Swordfish API for storage management or the underlying Redfish API for systems management. The content will continue to grow, so if you have suggestions for improvements or material to contribute please email storagemanagement@snia.org.
The Practical Guide will be updated frequently, so check back often!

Storage Field Day Persistent Memory and Scalable Storage Management Presentations Now on YouTube
|
|
On June 15th SNIA returned to Storage Field Day with experts, Rob Peglar, SNIA Board member and senior vice president and CTO at Symbolic IO, and Richelle Ahlvers, co-chair of the SNIA Scalable Storage Management Technical Work Group and principal storage management architect at Broadcom Limited. Videos of their presentations on Persistent Memory and Scalable Storage Management are now available on demand. Check them out at www.snia.org/sfd.

Reel It In: SNIA Swordfish with Richelle Ahlvers
Richelle Ahlvers gives an introduction to Swordfish. This was designed out of a need to improve storage management APIs in terms of efficiency, with the goal of making them applicable to hyperconverged and hyperscale users. This is a client-oriented, built on the DMTF Redfish specification.

SNIA Persistent Memory Introduction with Rob Peglar
Rob Peglar gives an overview on what the organization is developing and promoting with persistent memory. Rob frames this simply as having persistent storage living within a memory slot.
|
|
|
SNIA NVM Programming Model with Rob Peglar
In this session, Rob Peglar reviews the non-volatile memory programming model. This was developed to give a standard around which to programmatically address this emergent storage medium. Rob also takes time to answer delegate questions surrounding how this software model is implemented in hardware.
|
|
|
SNIA NVDIMMs with with Rob Peglar
In this third presentation, Rob Peglar reviews the specifications for different NVDIMM modules that SNIA has developed. These are vendor agnostic, and use a memory controller to manage data over the fast memory interface to either NAND flash, or a combination of flash and DRAM.

Storage Technology Changes Increase Certification Importance
|
|
Keeping pace with the evolution of data storage technology is tougher than ever. No longer are five or six storage vendors dominating the market, today’s IT professionals must understand the impact of Hyperscalers, flash-based storage, software-defined data centers, data analytics, the cloud and more.
Employers recognize these trends and are placing greater value on IT certifications. According to a recent CompTIA HR Perceptions of IT Training and Certification Study, nearly two thirds of HR executives indicate IT certifications are very valuable (66%) compared to only 30% three years ago. Their outlook on the importance of IT certifications has risen as well. 94% expect it to grow significantly or somewhat significantly over the next two years.
SNIA has certified over 13,000 storage professionals worldwide, and our vendor-neutral storage certification program continues to be the industry leader in the independent assessment of technology skills. To find out more about our certification program visit www.snia.org/certification.

Everything You Wanted to Know about Storage But Were Too Proud to Ask: What if Networking and Programming had a Storage Baby – Vermillion Pod
July 6, 2017
Rob Peglar, Symbolic IO
J Metz, Cisco
Alex McDonald, NetApp
Dror Goldenberg, Mellanox
When looking at data from the lens of an application, host, or operating system, it’s easy to forget that there are several layers of abstraction underneath before the actual placement of data occurs. In this webcast we are going to scratch beyond the first layer to understand some of the basic taxonomies of these layers, discussing:
- Storage APIs and POSIX
- Block, File, and Object storage
- Byte Addressable and Logical Block Addressing
- Log Structures and Journaling Systems
The State of Cloud Security
July 20, 2017
Eric Hibbard, Hitachi Data Systems
Mark Carlson, Toshiba
This webcast will include a discussion of existing cloud and emerging technologies (such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Analytics & Big Data, and more) – and explain how we’re describing and solving the significant security concerns these technologies are creating. SNIA experts will discuss emerging ISO/IEC standards, SLA frameworks and security and privacy certifications. Topics covered will include:
- A summary of the standards developing organization (SDO) activities:
- Work on cloud concepts, CDMI, an SLA framework, and cloud security & privacy
- Securing the Cloud Supply Chain:
- Outsourcing and cloud security, Cloud Certifications (FedRAMP, CSA STAR)
- Emerging & Related Technologies:
- Virtualization/Containers, Federation, Big Data/Analytics in the Cloud, IoT and the Cloud
Containers and Persistent Memory
July 27, 2017
Arthur Sainio, SMART Modular
Chad Thibodeau, Veritas
Alex McDonald, NetApp
Containers can make it easier for developers to know that their software will run, no matter where it is deployed. This webcast will discuss how persistent memory is a revolutionary technology that will boost the performance of next-generation packaging of applications and libraries into containers.
You’ll learn:
- What SNIA is doing to advance persistent memory
- What the ecosystem enablement efforts are around persistent memory solutions
- How NVDIMMs are paving the way for plug-n-play adoption into containers environments
- What customers, storage developers, and the industry want to see to fully unlock the potential of persistent memory in a container environment
Everything You Wanted To Know About Storage But Were Too Proud To Ask – Where Does My Data Go – Turquoise Pod
August 1, 2017
Rob Peglar, Symbolic IO
Scott Shadley, Micron
J Metz, Cisco
Chad Hintz, Cisco
In this, the seventh entry in the “Everything You Wanted To Know About Storage But Were Too Proud To Ask” popular webcast series we look into the mysticism and magic of what happens when you send your data off. Once you click “Save,” for example, where does it actually go?
When we start to dig deeper beyond the application layer, we often don’t understand what happens behind the scenes. In this webcast we will discuss:
- Volatile v Non-Volatile v Persistent Memory
- NVDIMM v RAM v DRAM v SLC v MLC v TLC v NAND v 3D NAND v Flash v SSDs v NVMe
- NVMe (the protocol)
Learn how these terms and concepts are at the heart of where compute, networking and storage intersect. Having a good grasp of these concepts ties in with which type of storage networking to use, and how data is actually stored behind the scenes.
