How You Can Start the Development of a New SNIA Standard

The SNIA Technical Council recently published the Guidelines for Approval of SNIA Technical Work Groups (TWG) v3.1. This document describes how you can bring a new idea for a standard into SNIA and create a new Technical Work Group (TWG) to develop that standard. Through SNIA, the standard that is developed has a pathway to becoming an ISO Standard.

SDC 2021 Registration is Now Open

Taking place September 28-29, 2021, SNIA's Storage Developer Conference (SDC) brings the storage developer community together to collaborate and network with peers through the sharing of ideas, industry developments and best practices.

SDC will again be a virtual event for 2021. Last year's virtual event had nearly 1,000 attendees who participated in live sessions, watched on-demand sessions, joined group discussions and attended live Birds-of-a-Feather meetings. This year will bring more of the same with an even more streamlined user experience.

Storage Device Energy Measurement

Should SNIA create a storage device energy measurement specification? A series of industry statements and observations have led to SNIA’s further investigation to convene an industry stakeholder birds of a feather session.

Join a special Birds of a Feather virtual session on Wednesday, June 16th 4:00 – 6:00 pm PT for a thoughtful discussion on this topic. To request a time to make a presentation, email: emerald@snia.org.

The SNIA Green Technical Work Group/Green Storage Initiative has created a storage system energy measurement specification that meets the needs and requirements of end users and regulatory bodies focused on systems and purchasable SKUs. SNIA has aggregated a core set of energy and performance experts to assess tools, workloads, to measure energy and storage work (IO) while addressing the fair treatment of system taxonomy without vendor bias. Learn more at www.sniaemerald.com

SNIA at SODACON

SNIA is pleased to present a custom track at the upcoming SODACON Global – Virtual on July 13-14, 2021. This track will feature a keynote by Richelle Ahlvers, SNIA Board of Directors, and sessions from SNIA Compute, Memory, and Storage (CMSI) and SNIA Storage Management Initiative (SMI) on storage management, edge computing, data protection and security, computational storage, and cloud native storage. Attendees can also connect with SNIA leaders in the Solutions Showcase.

SNIA is an alliance partner of the SODA Foundation, and their technical conference brings together industry leaders, developers, and end users to set the pivotal direction for the open data management ecosystem.  Registration is complimentary until June 15, 2021.

Upcoming Webcasts
What is Confidential Computing and Why Should I Care?
June 9, 2021
Mike Bursell, Co-founder, Enarx Project; David Kaplan, AMD; Ronald Perez, Intel; Jim Fister, The Decision Place

In the "arms race" of security, new defensive tactics are always needed. One significant approach is Confidential Computing: a technology that can isolate data and execution in a secure space on a system, which takes the concept of security to new levels. This SNIA Cloud Storage Technologies Initiative (CSTI) webcast will provide an introduction and explanation of Confidential Computing and will feature a panel of industry architects responsible for defining Confidential Compute.

Storage Technologies & Practices Ripe for Refresh: Part 2
June 22, 2021
John Kim, NVIDIA; Tom Friend, Illuminosi; Alex McDonald, Vice Chair SNIA Networking Storage Forum

In this second installment of our Storage Technologies & Practices Ripe for Refresh, we will cover older HDD device interfaces and file systems. Advice will be given on how to replace these in production environments as well as why these changes are recommended. We will also cover protocols that you should consider removing from your networks, either older versions of protocols where only newer versions should be used, or protocols that have been supplanted by superior options and should be discontinued entirely.

Confidential Compute: Protecting Data in Use
June 23, 2021
Paul O’Neill, Intel; Parviz Peiravi, Intel; Glyn Bowden, HPE

Confidential Computing is an emerging industry initiative focused on helping to secure data in use. The efforts can enable encrypted data to be processed in memory while lowering the risk of exposing it to the rest of the system, thereby reducing the potential for sensitive data to be exposed while providing a higher degree of control and transparency for users.

As computing moves to span multiple environments from on-premises to public cloud to edge, organizations need protection controls that help safeguard sensitive IP and workload data wherever the data resides.

Accelerate Disaggregated Storage to Optimize Data-Intensive Workloads
June 29, 2021
Tim Lustig, NVIDIA; Kfir Wolfson, Pliops; John F. Kim, NVIDIA

Join technology innovators as they highlight how to drive value and accelerate SSD storage through the specialized implementation of key value technology to remove inefficiencies through a Data Processing Unit for hardware acceleration of the storage stacks, and a hardware-enabled Storage Data Processor to accelerate compute-intensive functions. These disaggregated systems use just a fraction of computational load and power while unlocking the full potential of networked flash storage. By joining, you will learn why SSDs are a staple in modern storage architectures.
