SNIA Supports New ISO Standard for Information Technology, Security Techniques and Storage Security
SNIA recently announced its support and participation in the development of the ISO/IEC 27040:2015, the first international standard covering the broad topic of storage security.
To support this new standard, SNIA’s Security Technical Work Group has developed an index, which is perfectly aligned with the published standard and can be used to quickly locate terms and concepts throughout the standard. View the full press release here.
Call for Presentations for Storage Developer Conference is Now Open
Celebrating its twelfth year, the Storage Developer Conference (SDC) continues to be the only event created by storage developers for storage developers. SDC is now seeking storage development professionals willing to share their knowledge and experience by submitting a presentation proposal for consideration at SDC. The deadline for submissions is April 20. View the list of topics and submission process here.

Featured Article: Weave Your Cloud with a Data Fabric
(Excerpt from article recently published in DataCenter Solutions, February 2015 issue)
By Brad Nisbet SNIA Ethernet Storage Forum Member; NetApp
A cloud-based IT delivery model can speed up application development and provide flexible environments to accommodate the dynamic and unpredictable needs of the organization and its customers. It’s easy to see why there is so much interest among companies to learn more about how they can benefit from cloud. Despite the allure, however, many businesses are still reluctant to fully embrace a cloud model due to the perceived risks. As cloud services continue to evolve and become increasingly vital for success, it’s critical to properly understand the inhibitors that are leaving many unsure about how to jump into the cloud.
When thinking of cloud, the issue of security
is often top-of-mind for many organizations,
and rightfully so. As any organization needs
to carefully consider the security of their
environment, whether on or off-premises.
However, there are other common inhibitors
to enterprise cloud adoption that are just
as significant and increasingly top-of-mind,
including: managing complexity, creating or
preserving IT agility, and maintaining control
of valuable business data. These risks aren’t
necessarily new to cloud computing, but
as the cloud continues to change and take
shape, so do the risks.

SMI–Lab 2015 Plugfest
March 9 – 12, 2015
Mountain View, CA and Beijing, China
Storage Management Initiative (SMI) plugfests are held several times a year to test interoperability across SMI–S implementations, validate CTP test updates, and create proof–of-concept implementations of proposals for inclusion in the SMI–S standard. In addition, plugfests provide an opportunity to meet with peer developers and folks supporting commonly used CIMOMs. This Plugfest will be hosted by Microsoft.
Live Webcast: Hybrid Clouds: Bridging Private & Public Cloud Infrastructures
March 18, 2015
Every IT consumer is using cloud in one form or another, and just as storage buyers are reluctant to select single vendor for their on–premises IT, they will choose to work with multiple public cloud providers. But this desirable “many vendor” cloud strategy introduces new problems of compatibility and integration. To provide a seamless view of these discrete storage clouds, Software Defined Storage (SDS) can be used to build a bridge between them. This presentation explores how SDS, with its ability to deploy on different hardware and supporting rich automation capabilities, can extend its reach into cloud deployments to support a hybrid data fabric that spans on-premises and public clouds.
Live Webcast: Visions For Ethernet Connected Drives
March 25, 2015
SNIA's Ethernet Storage Forum (ESF) and the Dell’Oro Group will be hosting this live webcast. The arrival of mass–storage services, the emergence of analytics applications and the adoption of object storage by the cloud–services industry have provided an impetus for new storage hardware architectures. One such underlying hardware technology is the Ethernet connected hard drive, which is in early stages of availability. Join this live event to learn:
- What system–level architectural changes may be needed to support Ethernet connected drives
- What capabilities may emerge as a result of the availability of these new drives
- What part of the value chain spends the time and money to package working solutions
