"New and Exciting in DNA Data Storage"

Welcome to the DNA Data Storage Alliance 2025 summer newsletter! DNA Data Storage continues to make progress on multiple fronts. Here’s what’s happening within the Alliance and in the industry right now.

New White Paper: DNA Data Storage Technology Review
DNA Data Storage Technology Review” provides an overview of the state of DNA data storage technology, the metrics necessary to measure commercial readiness, and the challenges to reach commercial readiness.

New White Paper: DNA Data Storage Codecs - Examples, Requirements, and Metrics
DNA Data Storage Codecs - Examples, Requirements, and Metrics” explores the state of codecs for DNA data storage, the metrics they should be concerned with, and the important technical attributes that they should incorporate.

In the News: Challenges and Opportunities in DNA Computing and Data Storage
Thanks to Tom de Greef, Eindhoven University of Technology, for bringing this opportunity to the Alliance. This new Nature Nanotechnology paper discusses technologies and challenges regarding using DNA molecules as computing substrates and data storage media. Congratulations to the authors: Stéphane Lemaire, David Turek, David Landsman, Marthe Colotte, and Tom de Greef.

New Tool: Meet the DNA-Storalator
From our Alliance members at Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, a groundbreaking tool dubbed the DNA-Storalator offers a computational simulation platform for researchers to explore and refine solutions without the prohibitive costs of physical experiments. Learn more about it in this excellent article: “Can DNA-Storalator Revolutionize Data Storage Simulation?”

Podcast: Why Data Storage Matters More Than Ever
Tune in or watch to learn about the fundamental aspects of storage technologies and how SNIA and the industry are addressing data storage—from SSDs and HDDs—to cutting-edge solutions like DNA data storage.

Article: NatGeo: DNA Could Revolutionize How We Store Our Data in the Age of AI
National Geographic published an article on DNA data storage in their August hardcover issue; online version here. NatGeo cites the Alliance, quotes members, and consulted with us on the technical content and layout of the foldout graphic in the magazine. Great to have this storied publication talking about our ecosystem.

Article: The Race to Store Data Forever
“10 full-length movies could fit in a volume the size of a grain of salt.” Don't miss this great overview article about DNA data storage— how it works, players in the field, and where it’s headed! Featuring CATALOG, Atlas Data Storage (newly spun from Twist Bioscience), Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, and more.

Update: Storage and Computing with DNA Conference 2025
The Storage and Computing with DNA conference was a huge success with approximately 130 attendees! The conference served as a platform to exchange ideas, discuss recent advancements, and explore potential synergies across research and commercial applications for next-generation data storage and computational solutions. We have some of the presentations available here, with more presentations and videos coming soon, along with information on Storage and Computing with DNA 2026!

Upcoming Event: SNIA Developer Conference (SDC) 2025
Please join the Alliance and members at the SNIA Developer Conference in Santa Clara, California, September 15-17. SDC is a premier educational conference dedicated to providing vendor-neutral information on advancements in data technology, including DNA data storage.

The DNA Data Storage Alliance is a SNIA Community.
