Software-Enabled Flash™ (SEF) technology fundamentally redefines how flash memory is used for cloud and enterprise applications. Using highly-tuned, custom hardware and a host-based API and SDK, SEF technology empowers developers with control over data placement, latency outcomes and isolation. It is managed by a vendor-neutral Linux Foundation open source project that’s dedicated to enabling industry collaboration on this next evolution of storage. This session will introduce the SEF software and hardware stacks and describe how developers can access it. Once the basics are covered, we will demonstrate the hardware and software isolation, I/O weighted fair queueing, and copy offload capabilities running on the first-ever SEF Unit hardware.

Learning Objectives
  • Understand the new features of the open source Software-Enabled Flash technology stack.
  • Get versed in the new hardware features in Software-Enabled Flash, and how the host software stack can access them.
  • See how Software-Enabled Flash can isolate workloads, control latency outcomes, and offload background operations from the host.
  • Learn how to get involved with the project, from TSC meetings to membership.
