The Green Grid and SNIA Renew Alliance

The Green Grid (TGG) and SNIA Green Storage Initiative have refreshed their longstanding alliance agreement to reflect the current and future wide range of collaborative activities we plan to pursue. Part of the TGG and SNIA alliance is to proactively address and respond to draft industry data center storage system regulations that add mutual value to data center operators, regulators, and system vendors including European Union Lot 9, USA EPA Energy Star DCS program, and Japan TopRunner program.

In the coming months, a refreshed white paper will be published, titled "Storage Energy Efficiency and Architecture Trends." The recent SNIA Annual Members Symposium provided updates for SNIA Green including a roadmap of deliverables extending through 2023. See slides 30-37. Our joint white papers are public reference points to support the development of relevant and impactful data center storage equipment energy efficiency regulatory programs.

Why Cryptocurrency and Computational Storage?
February 15, 2022
Jonmichael Hands, Chia Network; Eli Tiomkin, NGD Systems

Blockchains, cryptocurrency, and the internet of markets are working to transform finance, wealth, safety, digital security, and trust. Storage-based cryptocurrencies had a breakout year in 2021. Proof of Space and Time is a new blockchain consensus that uses storage capacity to secure the blockchain. Decentralized file storage will enable alternatives to hyperscale data centers for hosting files and objects. Understanding the TCO of a storage system and optimizing the utilization of the storage hardware is critical in scaling these systems. Proof of space generation requires temporary compute and ephemeral storage resources. Having compute resources onboard an SSD can allow for local data processing to decrease overall system Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).

Join SNIA members as they discuss how a new approach of auto-plotting SSDs combined with computational storage can lower the total TCO. You’ll learn how autoplotting works, server use cases that illustrate significant performance/TB gains, and hear the results based on the SNIA Total Cost of Ownership Mode for Storage. This is a perfect opportunity to learn about the SNIA TCO model with an interactive case study.

15 Minutes in the Cloud: What is Cloud?
March 2, 2022
Chip Maurer, Dell Technologies; Alex McDonald, SNIA CSTI Chair

Everyone is familiar with the term "Cloud" but it's still worth asking "What is Cloud?"  It can be defined as "networked computing facilities providing remote data storage and processing services via the internet." While that definition is simple (if a little wordy!), the real-world of cloud is complex, and changing constantly.

If you are a cloud expert, these sessions might not be for you, but for everyone else, this series of short talks might clear up a lot of questions you may have. Join us for a discussion on:
  • Common cloud terminology
  • How all the parts work together
  • Why the cloud and what it's used for
  • Example use cases
  • SNIA educational resources on cloud
