Google

Jim Pinkerton is a Principal Engineer at Google, helping to lead the effort to optimize storage for AI/ML and data analytics workloads. His varied career includes a stint as Senior Principal Engineer at AWS Elastic Block Store (Block Storage), and before that a Partner Engineer in Microsoft Windows, helping lead Windows Storage and Networking, including creation of SMB3 and SMB2 (shared file storage), thus completing the tri-fecta of innovating in Blob, Block and File storage. Because he has a tendency to get bored, he previously focused on IPC networking and hardware design, including RDMA and Infiniband, helping lead innovation in the Windows networking stack, HPC MPI RDMA at Silicon Graphics, and 3 startups as a hardware engineer.

With AI and analytics workloads migrating towards hyperscale cloud computing, object storage users are increasingly requesting file-oriented access to their data.
