The hyperscale cloud innovates through relentless optimization. Cloud providers are always looking for ways to maximize the efficiency of every hardware and software component they deploy. To help them achieve that goal, KIOXIA released the open source Software-Enabled Flash™ API, which redefines the relationship between the host and flash devices, and allows cloud-scale users to unlock the most value from their flash.

Software-Enabled Flash™ (SEF) technology, a vendor-neutral Linux Foundation open source project, fundamentally redefines how flash memory is used for cloud and enterprise applications, providing storage developers the power to control flash memory data placement, latency outcomes and isolation. This session will dive deep into: using the new Software-Enabled Flash SDK to build applications, traditional I/O stacks vs. SEF implementations, configuration and control options available to the programmer, and how to get the most from SEF-based applications.

Everything else is the data center is software-defined, so it’s time to bring that concept to flash. This session will be an open forum making flash software programmable in the host for the data center. We’ll discuss Software-Enabled Flash concepts, the reference FTL, and the reference ZNS and block VirtIO drivers. Moderated by representatives of the Linux Foundation’s™ open source Software-Enabled Flash™ Project, we hope to cover its software defined architecture, internal workings, and their fit in cloud-scale applications.
