E2: The SSD Form Factor for the Petabyte SSD Era

Abstract

We are entering an era where 1PB on an SSD is becoming a reality by the end of the decade.  The E2 form factor defined by the SNIA SFF TWG achieves this by allowing more NAND placements than other existing form factors. While crossing the 1PB SSD milestone is possible, there are a lot of questions to answer.  Why is this needed? Why can this not be done with other form factors? What is the capacity per system? How do we maintain useful performance/capacity? How do we keep the device cool enough?

The goal of this presentation is to answer the questions and show why the E2 form factor has important applications as the industry looks at the future of near line SSDs.
