Abstract

SoftFlash proposes to create a software-defined storage substrate of flash SSDs (Solid State Drives) in the data center that is as programmable, agile, and flexible as the applications and operating systems accessing it from servers. This is made possible by recent disruptive trends in the flash storage industry towards increased ease of programmability and abundance of resources inside the SSD. The value proposition of SoftFlash for today’s cloud is structured around three pillars: (i) agile, flexible storage interface that can evolve with application needs, (ii) moving compute close to data for lower latency, higher bandwidth, and reduced energy access to data, and (iii) “near data” realization of secure computation in the cloud.
