Signal Processing techniques established and proven in the Magnetic Storage Domain over the last 40 years have helped propel exponential growth of the Magnetic Storage Industry (HDD & Tape). DNA Storage faces many of the similar challenges and obstacles found in magnetic devices. Utilizing methods established in the magnetic industry, Western Digital has shown capability to utilize its knowledge and bridge between magnetics and the DNA domain. These areas include estimation of Channel Capability through usage of Mutual Information (MI), along with Error Correction strategies like those applied in HDD designs. MI has proved to be a valuable magnetic recording channel metric for analysis of decoding performance. Western Digital utilized MI to analyze correction requirements for a given set of errors unique to DNA Storage to derive coderate efficiency guidelines. By bridging the DNA and Magnetic Storage, Western Digital is working to accelerate growth and advancements in DNA Storage.
