The DNA Data Storage Alliance (DDSA) has been reviewing the biosecurity requirements for DNA data storage in the context of regulatory policy for DNA created by these systems. The requirements for DNA data storage share some similarities with those in health and life sciences, but also have important differences, which the DDSA believes can and should be reflected in regulatory policy. This document provides the DDSA’s initial assessment of, and proposed contribution to, ongoing biosecurity policy discussions in the United States and the European Union, including the forthcoming European Biotech Act and its public consultation process.
This document provides some background on the topic of current regulatory policy around problematic DNA sequences as related to health and life sciences, and then offers Guiding Principles, and a proposed regulatory framework, for approaching the topic of policy for DNA data storage.
