Attention SNIA Voting Member Company Representatives -

Below, please find the candidate information and a Ballot for the 2014-2015 SNIA Board of Directors and Technical Council (TC) Elections. It is important that we have your vote and endorsement of these Candidates as they will be playing a key role in the leadership of this organization and the storage networking industry.

For the Board of Directors, 13 Voting Directors (10 Elected Seats) — 5 of the Directors in elected seats (Wayne Adams - EMC, David Dale - NetApp, Ron Emerick - Oracle, David Gimpl - IBM, and Jim Pappas - Intel) will remain on the Board to complete another year of their terms. This leaves 5 seats (with 5 nominated Candidates) open for election to 2–year terms by SNIA Voting Member Company Representatives, along with up to 3 seats open for appointment by the new Board (after it takes office in October).

For the Technical Council, 9 Voting Members (7 Elected Seats) — 2 of the existing Technical Council (TC) members in elected seats (Bill Martin - Samsung Electronics and Carlos Pratt - IBM) will remain on the TC to complete the second year of their terms. This leaves 5 seats (with 6 nominated Candidates) open for election to a 2–year term by SNIA Voting Member Company Representatives and 2 seats open for appointment by the new Board as recommended by the TC (after it takes office in October).

Biography

J Metz is a Sr. Product Manager for Cisco, focusing on Storage strategy and products for the Data Center Group. The primary focus of his work is involved in the development of converged networking products and technology in the Data Center. He has particular interest in the broad range of possibilities for storage as Data Center technologies continue to improve and push the boundaries of what’s possible. J is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Fibre Channel Industry Association (FCIA),

J received his PhD in Mass Communication Technology from the University of Georgia and has worked as a university professor, entrepreneur, systems engineer and solutions architect before arriving at Cisco.

Your Motivation for Seeking This Seat

I am very passionate about working within the storage industry to help keep developers and users up to speed on the changes needed to accommodate the constant data growth that is occurring nearly worldwide.  I feel it is very important for businesses to have information and education available to keep up with the rapid technology changes as well as how to integrate the evolving open source world with traditional storage sytems.  SNIA is in a great position to bring vendors together to align on changes and deliver a strong, consistent message to the users.  I believe collaboration between vendors and technology providers is critical in such a dynamic environment and am enthusiastic to share in the efforts, time and experience that needs to come together.

Biography

With 15 years of experience working in the HPC, Media and Entertainment, and Enterprise IT industries running global marketing programs, Molly Rector serves as DDN’s Chief Marketing Officer responsible for product management and worldwide marketing. Rector’s role includes providing customer and market input into the company’s product roadmap, raising the Corporate brand visibility outside traditional markets, expanding the partner ecosystem and driving the end-to-end customer experience from definition to delivery. Rector is a founding member and currently serves as Chairman of the Board for the Active Archive Alliance. She is also the Storage Networking Industry Association’s (SNIA) Vice Chairman of the Board and the Analytics and Big Data committee Vice Chairman. Prior to joining DDN, Rector was responsible for product management and worldwide marketing as CMO at Spectra Logic. During her tenure at Spectra Logic, the company grew revenues consistently by double digits year-over-year, while also maintaining profitability. Rector holds certifications as CommVault Certified System Administrator; Veritas Certified Data Protection Administrator; and Oracle Certified Enterprise DBA: Backup and Recovery. She earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in biology and chemistry.

My experiences on the SNIA Board continue to be positive, my contributions are significant, and my desire to serve is still strong after 15 years as a SNIA member.

Biography

SW Worth is a Sr. Program Manager at Microsoft, and an elected member of the SNIA Board of Directors. From 2002 through 2006 he was the worldwide lead for the SNIA Tutorials. Before joining Microsoft in late 2003, SW was Technical Marketing Manager at Crossroads Systems. From 1991-1999 he was an internal IT consultant with a large integrated electric and gas utility in the northeastern United States. He has a background in environmental engineering, and worked in paper mills in several U.S. states and in France.

Your Motivation for Seeking This Seat

 Fujitsu has been a member of SNIA for many years and has participated in various SNIA activities in the US and in Japan.  After being on the Board for 5 years I have an appreciation of SNIA’s strengths and contributions to the industry and feel that I can continue to make both general and specific contributions to SNIA as a Board member. 

For the last 2 years I have acted as SNIA Treasurer.  This role has provided me with additional insight into the strategic, financial and operational needs of the SNIA.  In particular, SNIA’s growth both US and internationally, and in new areas such as solid state storage, will be key factors in SNIA’s future growth.  As a Board member I hope to continue to contribute to these areas. 

Finally, I have had a long running interest in SNIA’s Technology Center and the projects it hosts.  I have been a member of the Technology Center Committee for 4+ years as well as currently serving as Chair of the committee.  Given the recent move to our new Technology Center location I would like to continue in this role and help the Technology Center become more of an asset to SNIA and the industry as a whole by involving the Technology Center in hosting SNIA and industry projects.

Biography

Mr. Zmyslowski’s responsibilities include engineering support for enterprise servers, storage and mobile products sold by Fujitsu America. In addition, Mr. Zmyslowski directs engineering pre-sales support, conducts interoperability and performance testing, and manages proof of concept work at the Fujitsu North American TRIOLE Integration Center. 

Mr. Zmyslowski has 30+ years of experience in the IT industry. He began his career at Amdahl Corporation in 1979 where he worked on CPU design and development. Mr. Zmyslowski held various technical and management positions at Amdahl before being named Vice President of the Integration and Solution Center at Fujitsu Technology Solutions in 2000.  With the merger of Fujitsu Technology Solutions and Fujitsu PC in 2004, he became SVP of Engineering of Fujitsu Computer Systems.  Mr. Zmyslowski took on his present position in April 2009 when Fujitsu America was formed.

Mr. Zmyslowski is the inventor of 12 U.S. patents. He holds a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from Kettering University and a master of science in electrical engineering from the University of Michigan.

I have been part of the SNIA leadership for almost a decade. I have served on the SNIA TC for the past 4 years with 2 years being the vice chairperson. I have been the chairperson of the GSI for 4 years and was a subcommittee chair for the Green TWG. I recently got a new TWG approved by the TC for the Solid State Storage System TWG. I am currently co-chair and getting the group and specification started.

I have been in high tech for about 24 years with such companies as Amdahl, Intel, Dell, Sun Microsystems, VMware and now the Evaluator group. I have a long background in system performance and end-to-end IT infrastructure with most of career focused on database technology and storage.

I received awards from the SNIA in early 2012 for my contribution to the GSI and the Green TWG.  The past 2 years I received an award of appreciation for my participation as the 1st day instructor for the Emerald Training.
I have also receive leadership awards for leadership participation in the other industry associations as well.

Your Motivation for Seeking This Seat

I have spent most of my career as forward thinker in technology to help solve the challenges that server computing and networking have created for storage technology.  This has always been the best part of my career when I get the chance to participate in technology futures, like participating in SNIA activities.  I think that the Technical Council is another outlet for this kind of work and I enjoy the helping the storage industry to develop new areas for the organization’s future.

There are still many areas in cloud storage computing, big data, data analytics, software defined X and Solid State Storage that are still growing and developing.

Biography

Leah Schoeb is a Senior Partner at the Evaluator Group bringing expertise ranging from cloud infrastructure and virtualization to system and storage performance. She draws from over 20 years of experience in the computer industry helping systems companies with performance engineering and optimization, market positioning, benchmark evidence creation, and guiding industry standards development for server, virtualized, and storage solutions.

Prior to joining Evaluator Group Leah has served in several leadership roles in performance engineering for companies, such as, VMware, Sun Microsystems, Dell, Intel, and Amdahl. Recently she has developed and executed long-term plans for the generation of new solid state technology and cloud computing performance evidence and used novel means to disseminate it to the industry. Leah has also participated and provided thought leadership for industry groups such as, Transaction Performance Council (TPC), Storage Performance Council (SPC), and the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA). She currently serves on the SNIA Technical Council and is the founder of the newly formed Solid State Storage System Technical Working Group.

I have served on the SNIA Technical Council since February 2012. I am co-chair of the NVM Programming Model TWG and chair of the membership committee. Previously I served on the SNIA board of directors from June 2009 through February 2012. As Vice Chair of the board in 2011 I led the 3 year strategy effort for 2011-2014. I have also served as treasurer of the SMI-S governing board.

Employment History

In the course of my 36 year career with HP I have provided technical leadership, organizational guidance and planning for numerous protocol, implementation, architecture and advanced development projects in disk and disk array product lines. My career began with 7 years of experience in disk controller protocol development. I have since accumulated 19 years of experience in disk storage management automation, disk array technology planning and distributed array architecture. Most recently I have 11 years of experience in storage technology and IP evaluation.

Highlights of my contributions include work on Service Oriented Storage, Quality of Service, IPv6, Storage Utility, Storage Consolidation, Federated Arrays, HP AutoRAID, Attribute Managed Storage, Disk Controller Fault Tolerance and solid state storage technologies. At this point I am heavily involved with solid state storage strategy, architecture and intellectual property as a member of HP’s StorageWorks Chief Technologist’s Office.

Industry Achievement Awards

Since my contributions have been primarily technical my achievements are best represented in intellectual property.  I have 32 US patents granted and 15 pending.

While not a personal achievement, the NVM Programming TWG recently received a “Best In Show” award at the 2014 Flash Memory Summit.

Your Motivation for Seeking This Seat

My own belief in the use of standards, collaboration and broad communication to strengthen the storage industry motivates my personal commitment to service on the SNIA technical council. I am fully vested in SNIA’s unique approach of combining standards activity and education for storage providers and consumers industry wide as it fills a critical need that leads to industry growth.

My commitment to the non-volatile memory area is an excellent example of my contribution to long term multi-vendor collaboration to accelerate adoption of future technologies by building an ecosystem of applications, OS middleware and devices. Through involvement with the Technical Council I can directly couple TWG leadership with SNIA technical governance.

Biography

I am a Distinguished Technologist in the chief technologist’s office of HP’s StorageWorks division. With 36 years of experience in HP’s storage business I am heavily involved with storage strategy, architecture and intellectual property. Throughout my career I have provided technical leadership, organizational guidance and planning for numerous protocol, implementation, architecture and advanced development projects in disk and disk array product lines.

I have 7 years of experience in disk controller protocol development, 19 years of experience in disk storage management automation, disk array development and distributed array architecture, and 11 years of experience in storage technology and IP evaluation. My contributions include work on Non-volatile memory systems, Service Oriented Storage, Quality of Service, IPv6, Storage Utility, Storage Consolidation, Federated Arrays, HP AutoRAID, Attribute Managed Storage, Disk Controller Fault Tolerance, Solid State Storage and various protocol standardization and implementation efforts.

I hold MS and BS degrees computer science and electrical engineering respectively from Cornell University. I currently have 32 US patents, primarily in the field of virtual arrays with 15 patents pending.
