The SNIA Storage Management Community has announced Swordfish® v1.2.9 as a SNIA Standard, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of open, standards-based storage management. As an extension of the DMTF Redfish® framework, Swordfish continues to provide a unified interface for managing storage resources across modern enterprise, hyperscale and cloud infrastructure environments.

New in Swordfish v1.2.9

Swordfish v1.2.9 focuses on enhancing functionality, improving interoperability and aligning more closely with evolving DMTF Redfish specifications. Several areas of the specification have been expanded to help developers, storage vendors and IT administrators build more consistent and capable management solutions.

Expanded Capacity, Mapping, and Masking Support

One of the more notable enhancements is the expanded specification guidance around Capacity and Mapping and Masking operations. These improvements provide greater clarity for implementing storage provisioning workflows, while supporting increasingly sophisticated deployment scenarios found in enterprise and cloud data centers.

A new Swordfish white paper detailing usage for Swordfish Capacity Models and information is coming soon.

In addition, Swordfish v1.2.9 includes support for reporting Persistent Reservations, enabling administrators to better monitor and manage clustered storage environments where reservation status is critical for high availability and coordinated access.

Improved Event and Message Handling

Swordfish v1.2.9 streamlines event management by updating and renaming the Error Handling Guide to the Message Guide. This expanded documentation provides clearer guidance for both event generation and error reporting, making implementations more consistent across vendors.

The release also restructures and expands the Swordfish event message registries while updating the associated event profiles, helping developers create more robust monitoring and troubleshooting capabilities.

Maintaining Alignment with DMTF Redfish Enhancements

Compatibility with the broader Redfish ecosystem remains a key objective for Swordfish. Version 1.2.9 incorporates several updates that further align the specification with the latest enhancements to DMTF Redfish usage, including:

  • Support for the LifetimeStartDateTime property in metrics
  • Updated guidance for standardized error reporting
  • Clarified action behaviors for greater implementation consistency

These enhancements make it easier for organizations already using Redfish to integrate Swordfish into their existing management frameworks while promoting greater interoperability across infrastructure components.

Enhanced NVM Express® Support

As NVM Express technologies continue to become the foundation for high-performance storage systems, Swordfish v1.2.9 updates the NVMe® functionality, including improvements to the mapping guide and schema support for NVMe personalities.

These updates help vendors accurately represent modern NVMe storage resources, while providing management applications with richer, standardized information about storage capabilities.

Expanded FileSystem and Metrics Capabilities

The release also updates file-system use cases and implementation mockups, while expanding several key metrics, including:

  • Updated file-system use cases and examples
  • Enhanced mapping and masking functionality
  • PersistentReservations reporting mockups
  • Expanded VolumeMetrics
  • Expanded StoragePoolMetrics

Why Swordfish Matters

Open standards play a critical role in reducing vendor lock-in and simplifying infrastructure management. Swordfish enables software developers, storage vendors, cloud providers, and enterprise IT admins by providing a common management interface across storage platforms, enabling interoperable solutions that are easier to deploy, automate and maintain.

As data centers continue to scale, standardized APIs such as Swordfish become increasingly valuable for enabling orchestration, monitoring and lifecycle management across diverse storage ecosystems.
